RADBODO, saint. — Bishop of Utrecht, died at Deventer on 29 Nov. 917.
As a youth he attended the Palatine School under his uncle Guntero, archbishop of Cologne, later moving to that of Carlo il Calvo, after the unfortunate affair of his uncle and Lotario at Fontanay (841). Because of his qualities, in 899 he was elected by the clergy and people of Utrecht as bishop of that city. Less than a year had passed since his episcopal consecration and canonical installation when, owing to the Norman oppression inflicted upon his titular church, R. was obliged to transfer his see to Deventer, where he died after having written many homiletic compositions (PL 132, 547-58; Anal. Boll., 1 [1882], pp. 104-11), the well-known eulogy of St. Martino (MGH, Script., XV, pp. 1239-44), and various sacred and secular poems (MGH, Poëtae lat. medii aevi, IV, pp. 160-73). Feast on 29 Nov.
