RADBODO, Saint. — Bishop of Utrecht, died at Deventer on 29 November 917.
From his youth he attended the Palatine School under his uncle Gunther, Archbishop of Cologne, later moving to that of Charles the Bald, following the unfortunate events involving his uncle and Lothar at Fontenay (841). On account of his talents, in 899 he was elected by the clergy and people of Utrecht as bishop of that city. Not a year had passed since his episcopal consecration and canonical possession when, due to the Norman oppression against his titular church, R. was forced to transfer his see to Deventer, where he died after composing many homiletic works (PL 132, 547–58; Anal. Boll., I [1882], pp. 104–111), the well-known encomium to St Martin (MGH, Script., XV, pp. 1230–44), and various sacred and profane poems (MGH, Poët. lat. medii aevi, IV, pp. 160–73).
