ROMANO, POPE. - Born at Gallese, near Civita Castellana, he was created cardinal of S. Pietro in Vincoli by Pope Stephen VI. He succeeded him in the pontificate and governed the Church from August to October or November 897, at which time he died during the sad events provoked by the excesses of the predominance over Rome of the Spoletan party (see FORMOSO). During his brief rule he granted the pallium to Vitale, patriarch of Grado, and confirmed the bishops of Elna and Gerona.
