ROMANO, PAPA

ROMANUS, Pope.** - Born at Gallese, near Civita Castellana, he was elected cardinal of St. Peter in Chains by Pope Stephen VI. He succeeded him in the pontificate and governed the Church from August to October or November 897, at which time he died, during the sad events provoked by the excesses of the dominance over Rome of the Spoletan party (v. FORMOSUS). During his brief rule he gave the pallium to Vitalis, patriarch of Grado, and confirmed the bishops of Elne and Girona.
