Ravanello, Oreste

RAVANELLO, ORESTE. - Master composer and organist, b. in Venice on 25 Aug. 1871, d. in Padua on 2 July 1938.

Having obtained his diploma in organ at the age of 16, he continued his studies of composition and organ with Girardi, organist of the Marciana, whom he succeeded in 1895. In 1898 he was appointed maestro di cappella at the "Santo" in Padua and in 1902 also professor of organ at the "Benedetto Marcello" Liceo. In 1914 he succeeded maestro Pallini as director of the Padua Musical Institute. He was one of the greatest champions of the revival of Italian organ art and of sacred music. He wrote 30 masses for 1 to 6 voices, motets, hymns, psalms and various compositions for organ in an elevated and severe style supported by an elaborate and fluid harmonization

He also left important didactic works for the study of the organ.
