CAPUCHIN TERTIARY RELIGIOUS OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS. – They were founded by Luigi Amigò at Masamagrell (Valencia), Spain, on 12 Apr. 1889. Papal approval dates from 19 Sept. 1902, and definitive approval of the Constitutions from 5 July 1910.
They are a clerical Congregation of perpetual simple vows. Their specific purpose is the re-education of young people; they also conduct preventive works on behalf of poor and abandoned children, as well as other institutions for young people in general. In 1937, the Pia Unione dei Cooperatori Mariani dell'Addolorata was established in order to continue in the world the beneficial work of the religious on behalf of young people who had left the re-education homes, and to spread the re-educational mission within families. The Congregation is established in Spain with 17 houses; in Italy (1927) with 4; in Colombia (1928) with 4; and in Argentina (1932) with 3. Its re-education institutions of various types number 13, with more than 2,000 pupils. The religious personnel comprise 295 professed members, 34 novices, and 300 aspirants. Three periodicals are published to disseminate the mission: Nuova Vita, in Italy; El Sembrador, in Colombia; and Surgam in Spain.
