CAPUCHIN TERTIARY RELIGIOUS OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS. - They were founded by Luigi Amigò at Masamagrell (Valencia) in Spain on 12 April 1889. Pontifical approval dates from 19 September 1902, and the definitive approval of the Constitutions from 5 July 1910.
It is a clerical Congregation with simple perpetual vows. Its proper end is the re-education of youth, and it also carries on preventive works on behalf of poor and abandoned boys and other institutions for youth in general. In 1937 the Pious Union of the Marian Cooperators of Our Lady of Sorrows was created to continue in the world the beneficial work of the religious on behalf of young people who have left the re-education homes, and to spread the re-educative mission within families. The Congregation is established in Spain with 17 houses; in Italy (1927) with 4; in Colombia (1928) with 4, and in Argentina (1932) with 3. Those for re-education, of the various types, number 13, with more than 2000 pupils. The religious personnel numbers 295 professed, 34 novices and 300 aspirants. Three periodicals are published to spread the mission: Nuova Vita, in Italy; El Sembrador, in Colombia, and Surgam in Spain.
