REUMONT, ALFRED von. — Prussian historian and diplomat, b. 15 Aug. 1808 in Aquisgrana, d. there on 27 Apr. 1887. A Catholic, he studied at the Universities of Bonn and Heidelberg and entered the Prussian diplomatic service.
In 1829 he came to Italy for the first time as an attaché to the legation in Florence; there he met Gino Capponi and collaborated on Vieusseux’s Antologia. A great admirer of Italian culture, he published studies, researches, and profiles on events and figures in the history of the Peninsula. From 1836 until 1843 he was attached to the legation in Rome, residing in Rome and Florence. He encouraged Vieusseux to found the Archivio storico italiano and collaborated on it until his death; his bibliographical notes on German works concerning Italian history were particularly highly regarded.
