VIEUSSEUX, GIAMPIETRO. - Man of letters, b. 29 Sept. 1779 at Oneglia, d. 29 Apr. 1863 at Firenze.

Of Genevan origin, he first engaged in commerce, then settled in 1819 at Firenze. A friend of the foremost Italian men of letters of his time, he founded that scientific-literary cabinet for the dissemination of the sciences and contemporary culture which was able to survive even when the periodical l'Antologia, founded by him in 1821, was suppressed in 1833. In 1841 he was among the promoters of the Archivio storico italiano. On the eve of the Congress of Verona (1822), he presented to the Austrian Minister at Firenze a plan for an Italian confederation, which he revived in 1848. He subsequently supported Cavour’s policy of unification.
