VIEUSSEUX, GIAMPIETRO. - Man of letters, b. Sept. 29, 1779 at Oneglia, d. Apr. 29, 1863 at Florence.
Of Genevan origin, he first devoted himself to commerce, then settled in Florence in 1819. A friend of the leading Italian men of letters of the time, he gave rise to that scientific-literary circle for the diffusion of the sciences and culture of the time, which was able to survive even when the periodical L'Antologia, founded by him in 1821, was suppressed in 1833. He was among the promoters, in 1841, of the Archivio storico italiano. At the time of the Congress of Verona (1822) he presented to the Austrian Minister at Florence a project for an Italian confederation, which he revived later in 1848. Subsequently he favored Cavour's unification policy.
