RIEUX. - A town and ancient diocese in the Haute-Garonne department in France.
The diocese was established in 1337 by Pope JOHN XXII as a suffragan of Toulouse. The ancient cathedral, dedicated to St Mary, features a 13th-century presbytery with artistic stalls from 1651; the nave dates to the second half of the 14th century with additions from the 17th century. The statue-adorned portal was damaged first by Protestants and later during the French Revolution; on the north side stands the octagonal brick bell tower, 43 m high. Of the ancient episcopal palace, a 15th-century tower and a late 17th-century portal remain. The diocese was united with Toulouse in 1801.
