RIEUX. – Town and former diocese in the department of Haute-Garonne, France.
The diocese was established in 1337 by Pope Giovanni XXII as a suffragan see of Toulouse. The former cathedral, S. Maria, has a thirteenth-century presbytery, with artistically carved choir stalls from 1651; the nave dates from the second half of the fourteenth century, with additions from the seventeenth. The portal, adorned with statues, was first damaged by the Protestants and later during the French Revolution; on the north side rises the octagonal brick bell tower, 43 m. high. Of the former episcopal residence there remain a fifteenth-century tower and a portal from the end of the seventeenth century. The diocese was united with Toulouse in 1801.
