ROHDE, ERWIN. - Classical philologist, b. in Hamburg on 5 Oct. 1845, d. in Heidelberg on 11 Jan. 1898. He taught at Kiel (1872), Jena (1876), Tübingen (1878), Leipzig and Heidelberg (1886).

He wrote: Der griechische Roman und seine Vorläufer (Leipzig 1876); Psyche. Seelenkult und Unsterblichkeitsglaube der Griechen (2 vols., Freiburg im Breisgau 1891-94; Italian trans. Bari 1916); this work has by no means grown old despite its almost 70 years of life; it traverses all the otherworldly beliefs of the Greeks from the Promethean era to the late Hellenistic era, through the Eleusinian and Orphic mystery-religion, the cult of Dionysus and its union with that of Apollo at Delphi, down to Neoplatonic philosophy, always setting forth in the discussion of the various problems the most correct view. Only the mutual relationship between Apollo and Dionysus at Delphi, in asserting which R. perhaps laid too much stress on the figure of Dionysus, from whom mantle prophecy by inspiration would have derived, has been subject to revision. R.'s minor writings were collected by O. Crusius (Kleine Schriften, 2 vols., Tübingen 1902).
