RUSUTI, FILIPPO. - Mosaicist active in Rome between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th.

In the upper part of the ancient facade of S. Maria Maggiore are mosaics dating from the time of the restorations begun by Nicholas IV (1288-92), which were respected when Fuga superimposed his facade and are clearly visible in the loggia of the blessing. In the upper zone, at the center, is Christ enthroned within a mandorla surrounded by four angels; above are the symbols of the Evangelists, and in two lateral compartments, saints led by the Virgin and the Baptist; the work is signed: «Philipp Rusuti Fecit Hoc Oüs». The four much-restored panels, with scenes of the miracle of the snow, are by another master, perhaps later.
