RUSUTI, FILIPPO. – Mosaic artist active in Rome between the end of the thirteenth century and the beginning of the fourteenth.
In the upper part of the ancient façade of S. Maria Maggiore are mosaics dating from the time of the restorations begun by Nicola IV (1288–92). They were preserved when Fuga superimposed his façade and are clearly visible in the benediction loggia. In the upper zone, at the center, is Christ enthroned within a mandorla surrounded by four angels; above are the symbols of the Evangelists, and in two lateral compartments are saints led by the Virgin and the Baptist. The work is signed: «Philipp Rusuti Fecit Hoc Oüs». The four much-restored panels, depicting stories of the miracle of the snow, are by another master, perhaps from a later period.
