SANT'ALESSANDRO DI OROSCI. — Nullius abbey immediately subject to the Holy See, situated in northern Albania among the mountains of Mirdizia.
In ancient times it was a Basilian abbey (according to others, a Benedictine one) dedicated to s. Alessandro the martyr. After its destruction, the territory was divided between the parishes of Oroshi and S. Nicola di Spaci, dependent on the diocese of Alessio. Because of the difficulties of communication with that diocese, Propaganda, by decree of 25 October 1888, detached the nullius abbey and assigned to it 5 parishes, to which another 3 were added in 1890. Finally, by decree of 2 July 1906, 2 parishes of the diocese of Sappa were assigned to II. The abbot was elected from among the Albanian secular clergy. The latest statistics date from 1940, according to which 13 priests minister in a territory of 1,400 sq. km. among 18,160 Catholics.
