Sufetula (SBIBA). — Not far from Sufetula, the Sufes Colonia or Sufibus of the Antonine Itinerary, whose bishops are known: Privatus, who in 256 was at Carthage; Maximus, present at the Council of Carthage in 419; Eustathius, who took part in the same city at the Conference of 484; from a notice by Leo the Wise it is inferred that in 833 the diocese still existed.
St. Augustine relates that in 399 the pagans massacred 60 Christians (Ep., 50). The present mosque of Djemäa Sidi Ocba, with its 36 columns, has been adapted from an ancient Christian basilica; traces of another have been found. A Christian inscription is in CIL, VIII, no. 11447, where Byzantine epigraphs relating to Solomon, Praetorian Prefect, are also recorded (ibid., nos. 259, 11423). Enrico Josi
