SBIBA. – Not far from Sufetula, the Sufes Colonia or Sufibus of Antoninus’ Itinerary, whose bishops are known: Privatus, who was at Carthage in 256; Maximinus, present at the Council of Carthage in 419; and Eustratius, who took part in the Conference of 484 in the same city. From a notice by Leo the Wise, it may be inferred that the diocese still existed in 833.
S. Agostino relates that in 399 the pagans massacred 60 Christians (Ep., 50). The present mosque of Djemâa Sidi Ocba, with its 36 columns, was adapted from an ancient Christian basilica; the remains of another have been discovered. A Christian inscription is found in CIL, VIII, no. 11447, where Byzantine inscriptions concerning Solomon, prefect of the praetorium, are also reported (ibid., nos. 259, 11423). Enrico Josi
