SCHAEPMAN, HERMANNUS JOHANNES ALOYSIUS MARIA. - Statesman of the Netherlands, b. at Tubbergen (prov. of Overijssel) on 2 March 1844, d. at Rome on 21 Jan. 1903 and buried in the Teutonic Cemetery.
Ordained priest in 1867, he subsequently studied at Rome (1868–69) and obtained a degree in surgery at the Sapienza. From 1870 to 1880 he was professor at the Seminary of Rijssenburg (archdiocese of Utrecht); in 1880 he was elected Deputy to the Second Chamber of the States General, notwithstanding his being a priest. A poet of little value, he nevertheless left an extensive body of journalistic writing; besides his various works on political and sociological subjects, noteworthy are the Letters from Rome, published in the great Catholic daily of Amsterdam, De Tijd, of which he was editor-in-chief.
