SCHAEPMAN, HERMANNUS JOHANNES ALOYSIUS MARIA. - Statesman of the Netherlands, b. at Tubbergen (province of Overijssel) on 2 March 1844, d. at Rome on 21 Jan. 1903 and buried in the Campo Santo Teutonico.

A priest in 1867, he then studied at Rome (1868-69) and obtained a degree in surgery at the Sapienza. From 1870 to 1880 he was a professor at the Seminary of Rijssenburg (archdiocese of Utrecht); in 1880 he was elected Deputy to the Second Chamber of the States General, despite being a priest. S.'s greatest merit is that of having restored of the old Protestant right (v. PAESI BASSI, II. History).

A poet of little worth, he instead left behind a vast journalistic output; besides the various writings on political and sociological subjects, notable are the Letters from Rome, which appeared in the great Catholic daily of Amsterdam De Tijd, of which he was editor-in-chief.
