SCHEIDE, PAPIRI DI

SCHEIDE, PAPYRI by. – The Greek papyri that the American John H. S. deposited at Princeton University consist of 21 sheets, that is, 42 pages, complete except for the first four, which are halved, and generally well preserved, from an ancient codex. The writing is a fine uncial of the 3rd century, probably from its first part. They contain Ex. 19:12–39:29, with minor lacunae. The papyri belong to the same codex as the 16 sheets of Chester Beatty pap. IX (v.), containing Ex. 11:25–17:21 and Esth. 2:20–8:6, and the 13 sheets of Chester Beatty pap. X, with part of the Greek version of Daniel. Consequently, all these papyri are designated by the same Rahlfs siglum, 967.

All the pages of the p. of S. still bear the original numbering, which runs from 39 to 90 of the complete codex, and make it possible to calculate almost exactly the codex’s original size and material. They were published in 1938 in a magnificent volume containing a comprehensive introduction, text, critical apparatus, and photographs of all the papyrus pages. This is the best text and the oldest manuscript of the Greek Ezekiel; it confirms the value of the Vatican codex B. Many readings peculiar to the p. of S. are found in the Lucianic codices and are rightly attributed to LUCINA (v.) prepared his recension.
