SYNCLETICA, Saint. - A native of Macedonia, born in Alexandria and died there ca. 400.
Having renounced marriage in order to consecrate herself to God, at the death of her parents she distributed her quite ample inheritance to the poor and withdrew with her blind sister into an abandoned burial cave, where in the presence of a priest she renewed her complete renunciation of the world and her definitive consecration to God. She would have wished to lead her life of prayer and penance in the greatest concealment; but the fame of her virtues, soon spread abroad, gathered under her direction a great number of persons, to whom with much firmness and depth she taught the duties of their state and especially humility and trust in God. In the last years of her life, besides many harassments of the devil, she was tortured by a cancer of the mouth, which disfigured her and made the sight of her unbearable; but she accepted everything with serenity and with joy until death, which took her at the age of 84. Feast, among the Greeks, on 4 January; in the Roman Martyrology, on 5 January.
