SOJO de ANGUERA, CARMEN de. — Of the Third Order of the Carmelites, born in Reus (province of Tarragona) on 15 Oct. 1856, died in Barcelona on 15 Aug. 1890.
After an adolescence spent in works of charity, she married Dr. Giorgio Anguera y Caylà and moved with him to Barcelona, where her spiritual director was the priest Salvatore Casafias y Pagés, later Bishop of Barcelona and Cardinal. She became a tertiary in 1879, an exemplary wife and mother, and was raised to great mystical heights in prayer. She endured extremely painful interior purifications and suffered severe torments from the demon. In 1879 she vowed to deny herself any sensible pleasure, even lawful ones, and in 1884 she wrote her offering of victimhood in expiation for sinners with her own blood. This interior and crucified life explains the wide and effective diffusion of her good works, especially in the St. Vincent de Paul Conferences. Her diocesan beatification cause was introduced in 1923, and in 1926 the Sacred Congregation of Rites approved her writings.
