SOJO de ANGUERA, CARMEN de. - Of the Secular Carmelite Third Order, born at Reus (province of Tarragona) on 15 Oct. 1856, died at Barcelona on 15 Aug. 1890.
After an adolescence spent in works of charity, she married Dr. Giorgio Anguera y Caylà and moved with him to Barcelona, where her spiritual director was the priest Salvatore Casafias y Pagès, later bishop of Barcelona and cardinal. A tertiary in 1879, an excellent wife and mother, she was raised to great mystical heights
in prayer, experienced most painful interior purifications, and suffered severe mistreatment from the devil. In 1879 she vowed not to allow herself any sensible pleasure, even if lawful, and in 1884 wrote in her own blood her offering of herself as a victim in expiation for sinners. This interior and crucified life of hers explains her broad and effective diffusion of good through works of charity, especially in the Conferences of S. Vincenzo de' Paoli. The diocesan cause for her beatification was introduced in 1923, and in 1926 the S. Congregazione dei Riti approved her writings.
