SOJO de ANGUERA, CARMEN de. - Of the secular Third Order of Carmel, b. at Reus (province of Tarragona) on 15 Oct. 1856, d. at Barcelona on 15 Aug. 1890.

After an adolescence spent in works of charity, she was married to Dr. Giorgio Anguera y Caylà and moved with him to Barcelona, where her spiritual director was the priest Salvatore Casafias y Pagès, later bishop of Barcelona and cardinal. A tertiary in 1879, an excellent wife and mother of a family, she was raised to great mystical heights in prayer, experienced most painful interior purifications and suffered severe mistreatment from the devil. She made a vow (1879) to grant herself no sensible pleasure, even a lawful one, and wrote (1884) with her own blood her offering of herself as a victim in expiation for sinners. This interior and crucified life of hers explains her wide and effective radiance of good in works of charity, especially in the Conferences of St. Vincent de Paul. The diocesan cause for her beatification was introduced in 1923, and in 1926 the Sacred Congregation of Rites approved her writings.
