SORDINI, CATERINA. - In religion Maria Maddalena dell'Incarnazione, foundress of the Perpetual Adorers of the Most Blessed Sacrament, b. at Porto S. Stefano (Grosseto) on 16 April 1770, d. at Rome on 29 November 1824.

Having entered the Franciscan Third Order at Ischia in 1788, and been elected superior in 1802, she felt impelled to carry out a divine command, already received in a vision, to found a convent in which perpetual adoration would be established. Having therefore moved to Rome in 1807 with two sisters, she bought from the Carmelites the house and church of Sts. Joachim and Anne at the Quattro Fontane, where on 8 July the new Institute of the Adorers began. On 2 February 1808 its Constitutions were approved and the continuous exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament was granted; on 22 July 1818 the Institute received the confirmation of Pius VII, renewed subsequently by Gregory XVI (1838), Leo XIII (1898) and Pius XI (1927). Under Gregory XVI it obtained a larger convent (St. Magdalene at the Quirinal, now St. Joachim of the Monti) and was not slow to spread in Italy, in Europe and in the Americas.
