Pietro Antonio Solari. — Son of Giuniforte, a Lombard architect and sculptor. Records of him date from 1446; he died in Moscow in 1493.
In 1476 he entered the service of the Fabbrica del Duomo in Milan as an architect; in 1481 he succeeded his father, who had died that year, in the works of the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan and the Certosa of Pavia; in 1490 he went to Russia. His architectural activity in Milan is credited with: the reconstruction (after the fire of 1446) of the church of S. Maria del Carmine, based on a vigorous system of piers and cross-vaults; the church of S. Maria dell'Incoronata and the Borromeo chapel in S. Maria Podone. In Moscow he worked on the walls and towers of the Kremlin, building their massive foundations. The attribution to Solari of the statue of the Virgin in the Archaeological Museum of Milan, believed to be one of his sculptures for the Duomo, remains disputed.
