SPADA, MARIANO. - Dominican theologian, b. at Acireale on 1 Jan. 1796, d. at Rome on 15 Nov. 1873.
A religious at Taormina, he was regent of studies at the Collegio S. Tommaso in Rome, associate of several masters general, Master of the Sacred Palace (1867–72), and bishop of Girgenti (1867). A keen theologian and a man of wide learning, he was highly esteemed by Gregorio XVI and Pio IX. Consultant to various Roman Congregations, his many duties did not allow him to write much; nevertheless, he left: L'esame critico sulla dottrina dell'Angelico Dottore s. Tommaso d'Aquino circa il peccato originale relativamente alla B. V. Maria (Napoli 1835); Animadversiones in opus I. B. Malou de dogmate Immaculatae Conceptionis B. Mariae Virginis (Roma 1862); Purgatorio dei reprobi sostenuto dal sac. Vincenzo de Vit (ivi 1864).
