STEFANARDO da VIMERCATE. - Dominican theologian and historian, b. at Vimercate (Milan), d. at Milan in 1297.
He served repeatedly as prior at Verona (from 1270 to 1286) and at Milan from 1290 to 1292. He was the first to teach theology at the cathedral of Milan (1296–97), enjoying a prebend established by Ottone Visconti.
His most celebrated work is the *Liber de gestis in civitate Mediolani* (in *Rer. Ital. Script.*, 2nd ed., IX, part 1, with a preface by G. Calligaris), a verse chronicle of the events in Milan from the years 1251–77, with particular attention to his friend Archbishop Ottone; it is the most important source for that period of Milanese history because it is contemporary and impartial. Surviving manuscripts include *De irregularitate* (Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, cod. D 35 sup., ff. 9–43); *Quaestiones super certis locis apparatus decretalium* (ibid., ff. 44–205); and *De controversia nominis et fortunae*, a short elegiac poem on the tragic events of Milan during the struggle between the Torriani and the Visconti. Other works by him have been lost.
