STEFANARDO da VIMERCATE. - Dominican theologian and historian, b. at Vimercate (Milan), d. at Milan in 1297.

Several times prior at Verona (from 1270 to 1286) and at Milan from 1290 to 1292, he was the first to teach theology at the cathedral of Milan (1296-97), enjoying a prebend established by Ottone Visconti.

The work that made him most famous is the Liber de gestis in civitate Mediolani (in Rer. Ital. Script., 2nd ed., IX, part 1, with a preface by G. Calligaris), a chronicle in verse of the events of Milan in the years 1251-77, with particular regard to Archbishop Ottone, his friend; it is the most important source for that period of Milanese history, because it is contemporary and impartial. There remain in manuscript De irregularitate (Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, cod. D 35 sup., ff. 9-43); Quaestiones super certis locis apparatus decretalium (ibid., ff. 44-205); De controversia nominis et fortunae, a short work in elegiac verse on the sorrowful vicissitudes of Milan in the struggle between the Torriani and the Visconti. Other works of his have been lost.
