STEFANARDO da VIMERCATE. – Dominican theologian and historian, born in Vimercate (Milan), died in Milan in 1297.
Several times prior in Verona (from 1270 to 1286) and in Milan from 1290 to 1292, he was the first to teach theology at Milan Cathedral (1296–97), enjoying a prebend established by Ottone Visconti.
The work that made him most famous is the Liber de gestis in civitate Mediolani (in Rer. Ital. Script., 2nd ed., IX, part 1, with a preface by G. Calligaris), a chronicle in verse of the events in Milan in the years 1251–77, with particular attention to the archbishop Ottone, his friend; it is the most important source for that period of Milanese history, because it is contemporary and impartial. The following works survive in manuscript: De irregularitate (Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, cod. D 35 sup., ff. 9–43); Quaestiones super certis locis apparatus decretalium (ibid., ff. 44–205); De controversia nominis et fortunae, a short work in elegiac verse on the tragic events in Milan during the struggle between the Torriani and the Visconti. Other works of his have been lost.
