SPORTELLI, Cesare, Venerable. - Redemptorist preacher, b. at Mola di Bari on 19 June 1701, d. at Pagani on 19 Apr. 1730. Having become a lawyer of the Neapolitan bar, he was procurator of the prince of Vasto.
Together with his most pious mother Barbara Pavia he helped financially Msgr. T. Falcoia, bishop of Castellammare di Stabia, to bring the Maestre Pie of St. Lucy Filippini from the Papal State into the Kingdom. In 1732 he joined St. Alphonsus M. de' Liguori, who was founding the Redemptorist Missionaries, and he remained constantly faithful to him amid the defections and persecutions of those early days.
A priest in 1737, he devoted himself zealously to the salvation of the most abandoned souls of the Irpinian and Salernitan countryside; he also exerted himself in preaching to ecclesiastics and cloistered religious with abundant fruits. He contributed to the construction of the colleges of Pagani and Materdomini as rector and consultor general. He left over a hundred letters of predominantly ascetic content, and various notes valuable for the early history of the Redemptorists. Despite St. Alphonsus's efforts for the beatification of his heroic disciple, the cause was introduced only in 1891.
