STUDACH, JAKOB LORENZ. - Born on 25 January 1796 at Altstätten (Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland), died on 9 May 1873 at Stockholm.

Ordained a priest on 13 February 1820, he became chaplain of Duke Eugene of Leuchtenberg, at Munich; then, in 1823, of the Duchess Josephine, wife of the prince

Prince hereditary of Sweden. Vicar apostolic of Sweden and Norway in 1833, he worked successfully for the definitive re-establishment of the Catholic Church, begun by his four predecessors. He built the first three churches: that of St. Eugenia in Stockholm (1837), that of St. Joseph in Gothenburg (1842) and that of the Redeemer in Malmö (1872); and, the first in Norway, that of St. Olaf in Oslo (1856). On a visit to Rome he was appointed bishop on 22 May 1862. He also gave thought to schools, nurseries and the poor, bringing the first nuns from abroad. He published the first Catholic books in Swedish. Of his literary and historical studies, worthy of mention is: Die Urreligion oder das entdeckte Ur-Alphabet (2 vols., Stockholm and Leipzig, 1857-59).
