Eleven years later, on 17 June 1899, S. was appointed bishop of Stanislau in Galicia by a bull of Pope Leo XIII. After the death of Julian Kuilovsky, metropolitan of Lviv, the same Pope elevated him to the dignity of metropolitan and archbishop of Halych Lviv on 16 January 1901; he held this office for 45 years, devoting himself with great zeal to his pastoral and apostolic duties, personally visiting his vast diocese, preaching, hearing confessions, and instructing clergy and people. He also wrote more than 150 pastoral letters on various topics concerning the religious, social, and national life of his faithful. He did not neglect the careful care of school youth, orphans, the sick, and the poor, establishing for this purpose boarding schools, institutes, orphanages, and hospitals. A promoter of ecclesiastical studies, he built the minor and major seminaries for the formation and education of the clergy, first at Stanislau and then at Lviv, where he founded the seminary and the ecclesiastical academy; he continually promoted theological studies and scholarly publications. Pope Pius XII, in his encyclical *Orientalis omnes* of 13 December 1945, expressed a laudatory judgment of him. He translated into Ukrainian the ascetical works of St Basil the Great (*Leopoli* 1929) and published the very interesting pamphlet *De sapientia Dei* (ibid. 1932).
His zeal was not confined to the administration of his archdiocese but extended also to those of his
