Telesthesia

TELESTESIA

TELESTHESIA (Τῆλε = Lontano and Αἴσθησις = Sensibilità). - A term used to indicate that particular form of direct clairvoyance in which the relation of knowledge takes place at a distance between "mind and things," with the exclusion of any possible intervention of the ordinary senses or of the subconscious thought of third parties. Richet sought to replace the term with that of cryptesthesia.

The phenomenon has been demonstrated, with positive proofs, to belong to the natural order; however, in the present state of experimentation and of our knowledge, it is not possible to explain its mechanism (v. CHIAROVEGGENZA).

From the moral point of view, t. does not fall under the ecclesiastical prohibitions concerning spiritism (v.), except in the case in which it is used with the presumption of discovering future events linked to the unfolding of free will.
