TEODERICO (TEODORICO), ANTIPOPE. — Cardinal-bishop of S. Rufina, elected upon the death of the antipope Clement III (8 September 1100) by the imperial faction and consecrated during the night in St Peter’s.
From a fragmentary passage in the Annales Beuenses (ed. G. H. Pertz, in MGH, Scriptores, II [1839], p. 250), it appears that he held a small council on 30 September. In any event, he was captured after 105 days of pontificate, while he was going to the Emperor; brought to Rome, Paschal II confined him to the monastery of Cava dei Tirreni (late 1100–early 1101), where he took the monastic habit. He died in 1102, and his epitaph (whose authenticity is doubted by some) is still preserved in the abbey cemetery (α Theodo/ri/cus/in/M pace CII: cf. Codex diplomaticus Covenis, I, Napoli 1873, p. LXVIII).
