THEOPHILACT (Theofilacias, Theophilactus). - A Greek by origin, as it seems, improperly numbered among the antipopes.

Archdeacon of the Roman Church from the pontificate of Pope Zachary onward, two letters of his written to St. Boniface, the apostle of Germany, are extant (S. Bonifatii et Lulli ep., 84, 85; ed. E. Dümmer, in MGH, Epist. Merovingici et Karolini aevi, I [1892], pp. 366-67). From October 753 to July 755 he accompanied Stephen II to Pavia and to France. On the death of Stephen (26 April 757), the pro-Byzantine party set T. against Paul I, the brother of the deceased and a mere deacon, but the latter's electors, being more numerous, won the victory, and the partisans of T., barricaded in the archdeacon's house, were dispersed; T. was heard of no more, and Paul wrote to Pepin that he had been elected "a cuncta populorum caterva" (Liber Carolinus, ep. 12; ed. W. Gundlach, ibid., p. 508).
