THEODOTUS THE GNOSTIC. - A disciple of Valentinus, belonging to the eastern school of his master (on the two Valentinian schools see Hippolytus, Ref., VI, 35, 5-7).

Nothing is known about his person and life, but he was probably a contemporary of Ptolemy (around 160-170). His doctrine has affinities with that of Marcus. Clement of Alexandria in his Excerpta ex Theodoto has preserved fragments of T.'s doctrine. It is not always possible, however, to distinguish clearly T.'s work from that of Clement (v. VALENTINO).
