THEODORE THE READER. - So surnamed from his function as lector in the church of St. Sophia in Constantinople: he lived in the 6th century.

Author of an epitome of the historical works of Socrates, Sozomen and Theodoret, generally called Historia tripartita, on which book I and the beginning of book II of Cassiodorus' Historia ecclesiastica tripartita depend. Theodore's second work is the continuation of the Historia tripartita (in 2 books), which runs from 450 to 527. While the Historia tripartita has not yet been published, the text of the second work has been lost. An epitome of this second work, also lost, served as a source for later historians, especially Theophanes the Confessor (d. 817). The basis of Theodore's work was a chronicle of Eustathius of Epiphania (in Syria) and the ecclesiastical history of the Monophysite John Diacrinomenos.
