TEODUINO di LIEGI. - Theologian and bishop, originally from Bavaria, born at the beginning of the 11th century, died in 1075.
Appointed bishop of Liegi (1048) by Emperor Enrico III, he distinguished himself by pastoral zeal. Important is the letter (PL 146, 1441-44) which he wrote in 1050 to Enrico, king of France, to dissuade him from convening a council against Bishop Brunone Tours (v.), since their condemnation was to be reserved to the Pope; in it he also proves that the Eucharistic error of Berengario had already been condemned by Christian antiquity, which, in the Eucharist, would have denied the umbra, the figura. The brief collection demonstrates the serious misunderstanding of which certain medieval authors were victims in interpreting patristic texts, in which the figura, the imago, the sacramentum are not opposed to reality.
