THEODUIN OF LIÈGE. - Theologian and bishop, a native of Bavaria, b. at the beginning of the 11th century, d. in 1075.
Appointed bishop of Liege (1048) by the emperor Henry III, he was distinguished for pastoral zeal. Important is the letter (PL 146, 1441-44) that in 1050 he wrote to Henry king of France, to dissuade him from convoking a council against the bishop Bruno of Angers and Berengar of Tours (v.), since their condemnation was to be reserved to the Pope; in which he also proves that the eucharistic error of Berengar had already been condemned by Christian antiquity, which in the Eucharist would have denied the umbra, the figura. The brief collection demonstrates the grave misunderstanding of which some medieval authors were victims in the interpretation of the patristic texts, in which the figura, the imago, the sacramentum are not opposed to the reality.
