TEODUINO of LIEGI. — Theologian and bishop, originally from Bavaria, born at the beginning of the 11th century, died in 1075.
Appointed bishop of Liège in 1048 by Emperor Henry III, he distinguished himself by his pastoral zeal. Important is the letter (PL 146, 1441-44) that in 1050 he wrote to Henry of France, to dissuade him from convening a council against Bishop Bruno Tours (v.), since their condemnation was reserved to the Pope; in which he also proves that the Eucharistic error of Berengar had already been condemned by ancient Christianity, which would have denied the "umbra," the figure, in the Eucharist. The brief collection demonstrates the serious misunderstanding of which some medieval authors were victims in the interpretation of patristic texts, in which the figure, the image, the sacrament do not oppose reality.
