TIRASPOL, DIOCESE of - Suffragan of Mohilew, it comprises southern Russia from the Dniester almost to the Ural River.
The diocese was founded on July 3, 1848. The see was formerly Cherson; but in fact the bishop resided at Saratov on the Volga and from 1917 at Odessa. The faithful of the diocese (who in 1914 numbered about 390,000, divided into 100 parishes with 179 priests) suffered greatly under the Bolshevik regime and their number decreased considerably. In 1926 the diocese was divided into five apostolic administrations; but the new organization remained without effect, since the administrators disappeared into prison or exile. The diocese is today completely devastated, without churches and without priests.
