DIOCESE OF SAINT JOHN OF ACRE (AKKĀ, PTOLEMAIS). - Episcopal see of the Melkites with residence at Haifa, suffragan of Tyre.

It was an episcopal see from the 3rd century. The series of Greek-Catholic bishops begins again around 1753. Today the diocese is located in the new State of Israel and the situation is upset by the mass emigration of Arabs, including Christians, from the territory occupied by the Jews. Thirteen of the 40 churches are closed for lack of faithful. About 13,000 Greek-Catholics remain.
