TIMOTHY I, Nestorian Patriarch. - Born in 727 or 728 at Hazzà near Arbela, died in 823. A monk in the monastery of St. George, he was later bishop of Bejt Bagaš and in 779 patriarch.
After two years of struggle to have his office recognized by all, he governed his Church in relative calm with wisdom and firmness for more than 40 years, during which it reached its greatest expansion. He founded 6 new ecclesiastical provinces, sent missionaries, generally monks, to the Caspian Sea, into Transoxania, as far as distant Tibet and southern Arabia, improved the formation of the clergy by founding schools, and took great care in the choice of bishops. With the court of the 'Abbāsid caliphs in Baghdad, where he had strong supporters, he always knew how to maintain good relations, and he defended the Christian religion before the caliph al-Mahdi in a public disputation.
Among his writings, mention should be made first of all of his numerous and highly interesting letters (more than 200), a series of canonical decisions, and his apology for Christianity before the caliph al-Mahdi. His Christological doctrine is substantially that common to the Nestorians. He acknowledges the necessity of Grace; his conception of the Eucharist seems exact; he admits the validity of Baptism administered by Catholic or Monophysite priests, and considers the five patriarchs as equal among themselves, with a certain pre-eminence of the one of Seleucia-Ctesiphon.
