TIMISOARA, DIOCESE OF. – City and diocese in Romania.
It has an area of 24,755 sq. km. and a population of 1,300,000 inhabitants, of whom 380,000 are Catholics; it has 164 parishes served by 220 diocesan priests and 47 religious priests; it has 7 male religious communities and 33 female ones (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 422).
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XI through the apostolic constitution Solemini conventione of 5 June 1930, as a suffragan of Bucharest, while elevating the church of St George the Martyr to the rank and dignity of a cathedral.
