PTOLEMAEUS AND LUCIUS, Saints, Martyrs. - They died in 161 AD and are commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on September 19.

The only author who speaks of them is St. Justin, who took his cue precisely from their martyrdom to write his second Apology. Ptolemy had converted to the faith a woman who was living dissolutely with her husband. The latter, vexed by his wife's new manner of life, denounced her to the prefect, and since the trial dragged on, to get his revenge he accused Ptolemy as the author of his wife's conversion. Arrested by the prefect Urbicus, Ptolemy was first handed over to a centurion who tortured him, then, brought into court and having confessed himself a Christian, he was condemned to beheading. Lucius was present at the trial and, seeing the iniquity of the sentence, protested against the prefect. The latter, by way of reply, after a summary interrogation condemned him to the same punishment. Another Christian, whose name however St. Justin does not report, was likewise condemned for the same reason.
