UGO of PORTA RAVEGNANA. - Jurist, one of the four doctors, disciples of Irnerius. Born in Bologna perhaps at the beginning of the 12th century, died between 1166 and 1171. He is remembered for his participation in the Diet of Romagna (1158); documents exist (1151-66) attesting to his activity as an advocate and imperial judge.
Of greater importance is his scholarly work; and it would be even more so, were it not for the uncertainty surrounding most attributions, which prevents modern scholars both from confirming and contesting the praise of *mens legum* that his contemporaries bestowed upon Ugo and which legend placed on the lips of the dying Irnerius. It does not appear that the *Summula de pugna* attributed to him is actually his; nor does the attribution to him of the *Summa Codicis Trecenis* find any credence today. The authorship of a collection of distinctions is likewise uncertain; that of an *Ordo iudiciorum* is even more doubtful. Certainly by Ugo are some isolated distinctions, several glosses (usually signed with the letter V.), a *Summula de errore*, and a *Summula de petitione hereditatis*.
