HUGO OF PORTA RAVEGNANA. - Jurist, one of the four doctor-disciples of Irnerius. Born in Bologna perhaps in the early years of the 12th century, died between 1166 and 1171. He is remembered for his participation in the Diet of Roncaglia (1158); there are documents (1151-66) of his activity as a causidicus and imperial judge.
Of greater importance is his scholarly work; and it would be more so, were it not that the uncertainty of most of the attributions prevents modern scholars both from confirming and from contesting the praise of mens legum that U.'s contemporaries gave him and that legend placed on the lips of the dying Irnerius. The Summula de pugna that goes under his name does not appear to be his; nor does the attribution to him of the Summa Codicis Trecensis any longer find credence. The authorship of a collection of distinctiones is likewise uncertain; that of an Ordo iudiciorum is very uncertain. Certainly U.'s are some isolated distinctiones, a number of glosses (usually marked with the siglum V.), a Summula de errore and a Summula de petitione hereditatis.
