UGO di PORTA RAVEGNANA. - Jurist, one of the four doctors who were disciples of Irnerio. Born in Bologna perhaps at the beginning of the 12th century; died between 1166 and 1171. His participation in the Diet of Roncaglia (1158) is recorded; documents (1151–66) attest to his activity as an advocate and imperial judge.
His scholarly work is of greater importance; and it would be still more so if the uncertainty of most attributions did not prevent modern scholars from either confirming or disputing the praise of mens legum bestowed upon U. by his contemporaries and placed by legend upon the lips of the dying Irnerio. The Summula de pugna, which bears his name, does not appear to be his; nor does the attribution to him of the Summa Codicis Trecensis now find credence. The authorship of a collection of distinctions is likewise uncertain; that of an Ordo iudiciorum is extremely uncertain. Certainly by U. are some isolated distinctions, several glosses (usually marked V.), a Summula de errore, and a Summula de petitione hereditatis.
