Hugo of Newcastle

HUGO OF NEWCASTLE. - Franciscan theologian of the 14th century, called de Novo Castro, a locality not clearly identified and placed in England according to some, on the Franco-German border according to others.

Called "the Scholastic," he was a fervent follower and defender of Duns Scotus, whom he calls doctor noster in his writings; he in fact appears in the medallions of the 14 principal Scotists, placed in 1513 around Scotus's tomb in Cologne. He wrote: Comment. in IV Sententiarum (unpublished); Tractatus de victoria Christi contra Antichristum, composed in 1319 (Nuremberg 1471) and other works, whose authenticity is uncertain.
