UGO of NEWCASTLE. - Fourteenth-century Franciscan theologian, called *de Novo Castro*, a locality not well determined and placed in England by some, on the Franco-German border by others.
Known as “the Scholastic,” he was a fervent follower and defender of Duns Scotus, whom he calls *doctor noster* in his writings; he indeed appears among the fourteen principal Scotists depicted in 1513 around Scotus’s tomb in Cologne. He wrote: *Comment. in IV Sententiarum* (unpublished); *Tractatus de victoria Christi contra Antichristum*, composed in 1319 (Nuremberg 1471); and other works whose authenticity is uncertain.
