Ut Queant Laxis Resonare Fibris

UT QUEANT LAXIS RESONARE FIBRIS. - Hymn of Vespers in the Office of the feast of St. John the Baptist, written by Paul the Deacon, a Benedictine monk of the 8th century.

Drawing inspiration from the Gospel of St. Luke, the poet highlights the portentous signs that preceded the birth of the Precursor. The first stanza is of great historical and musical interest because the initial letters of each hemistich, which follow one another in the six sounds of the hexachord, were taken by Guido d'Arezzo to give names to the musical notes of the new system of solmization.
