VANDELBERT OF PRÜM. - Monk of Prüm and deacon, b. around 813 and d. after 870.

He is owed one of the oldest known martyrologies, composed around 848 in Latin hexameters, written at the request of the learned Otric, when V. was at Cologne. It is a compilation made from martyrological texts (above all the M recension of Florus) sent to him by Florus of Lyon, with whom he was in assiduous correspondence. He later published an Horologium, or notes on the knowledge of time, of the seasons, of the days and months of the year and the origin of their names. He also wrote in 839 a life of St. Goar, hermit and confessor, the Hexameron, a poem on the creation of the world, and some poems.
