HUGH OF FLEURY. - Little is known of the life of this monk who became famous for his vast
learning. D. after 1118.

U. of Ste Marie, a Benedictine at Fleury-sur-Loire, whence
his nickname, left several works of precise style
and sound erudition. In the Tractatus de regia potestate et sacerdotali dignitate (MGH, Lib. de lite, II, p. 465
ff.; PL 163, 930-76) he attempts to calm the disputes that then
divided the two powers; in the Chronicon, which extends
from Abraham to Charles the Bald, he avoids giving a mere
compilation, but attempts an essay in synthesis; in the Vita
s. Sacerdotis (PL 163, 979-1004) he paints a notable
picture of the life of the bishop of Limoges. He also left
an Epistola dedicatoria to the Empress Matilda which was
to appear at the beginning of a history, from Louis the Pious
to Louis the Fat (840-1108). Duchesne attributes to him
Le livre des Miracles de St Benoît and a Francorum hi-storia brevis et succincta from 842 to 1108 (MGH, Script.,
IX, pp. 376-95).
