FLORO di LIONE. – Writer, d. ca. 860. At the beginning of the 9th century he was a deacon in Lyon, where he directed the Cathedral school under four successive bishops, attracting many students.
He is responsible for numerous theological works, especially polemical ones, including De electione episcoporum, in favor of freedom of election, and the Capitula ex lege et canone collecta, a canonical collection. Together with Agobard, he opposed the liturgical reforms of Amalarius, whose condemnation he secured at the Council of Quierzy-sur-Oise in 838. He corrected the Psalter and composed a commentary on the letters of s. Paulo. He displayed vigorous activity in the dispute over predestination against Gottschalk of Orbais. He demonstrates extensive erudition and scrupulous accuracy in the numerous additions to Bede’s Martyrology. Numerous poetic compositions and some letters by him have survived.
