FLORI OF LYON. - Writer, d. ca. 860. At the beginning of the 9th century he was a deacon at Lyon, where he directed the cathedral school under 4 successive bishops, attracting many students.

Numerous theological works are owed to him, especially polemical ones, among which are De electione episcoporum, in favor of freedom of election, and the Capitula ex lege et canone collecta, a canonical collection. Together with Agobard, he fought the liturgical reforms of Amalarius, whose condemnation he obtained at the Council of Quierzy-sur-Oise in 838. He corrected the Psalter and composed a commentary on the letters of St. Paul. He displayed vigorous activity in the predestination dispute against Gottschalk of Orbais. He demonstrates vast erudition and scrupulous exactness in the numerous additions to Bede's Martyrology. Numerous poetical compositions and some letters by him survive.
