FLODOARD OF REIMS. - Historiographer, b. in 894, d. on 28 March 966. He was a pupil at the archiepiscopal school of Reims, then deacon of the Cathedral and archivist. In the conflict between the archbishops Hugh of Vermandois and Artald, he defended the latter, with whom he was present at the Synod of Ingelheim (948). Under Leo VII (936-39) he visited Rome. In 951 he was elected bishop by the people of Noyon, but the election was annulled by King Louis IV. It is doubtful whether in his later years he became a monk.

His principal work is the Annales, which run from 919 to 966, an important source for the history of France, Italy and Germany. Editions in MGH, Scriptores, III, pp. 363-408, and more recently Ph. Lauer, Les Annales de Flodoard, Paris 1905, with a good introduction. He also composed a Historia Remensis Ecclesiae, down to 948, precious above all for the documents it collects: the edition is in MGH, Scriptores, XIII, pp. 405-599. Three great poems of his are collected in PL 135, 491 ff.
