LEO VII, Pope. - He reigned from January 936 to July 939, but nothing is known about his person and little is known of his activity.
The chronicler Flodoard calls him a "true servant of God," which suggests that he was favorable to the reform of the morals of the clergy advocated at that time by certain monks and by the master of Rome himself, Alberic, nephew of Theophylact. The few surviving bulls of this Pontiff are almost all addressed to the monasteries of Cluny and Subiaco and concern donations and privileges. Good relations prevailed between him and Alberic, which later deteriorated under subsequent pontiffs. Finally, mention should be made of an act of his addressed to the German bishops with various provisions on marriages between blood relatives, on the recitation of prayers during the Mass, and on excommunication against magicians and soothsayers.
