VENIER, SEBASTIANO. - Doge of Venice, b. ca. 1496, d. March 3, 1578.
After having held high offices in the Republic, among them those of savio grande, provveditore generale alle fortezze and procurator of St. Mark, he was appointed provveditore at Corfu in 1570. In the same year, named captain "general da mar," he reorganized the fleet and laid siege to Durazzo. John of Austria. In the battle of Lepanto he gave proof of great skill and exceptional daring. But after the victory, Spanish policy, which governed the conduct of Don John of Austria, forced Venice to place another captain general at his side, Iacopo Foscarini. These rivalries, which prevented the allies from exploiting the success, led, in the peace with the Turks, to the cession of Cyprus. Venice, however, gave V. the highest recognition of his worth, electing him to the dogate in 1572.
