ZACAPA, DIOCESE OF. - A city and diocese of Guatemala comprising the civil provinces of Z., Chiquimula, and Izabal.
It has an area of 14,044 sq. km. with a population of 237,561 inhabitants, of whom 234,563 are Catholics; it has 7 parishes served by 2 diocesan priests and 8 regular priests, and possesses a seminary (*Ann. Pont.* 1953, p. 460).
The diocese of Z. was erected by Pope Pius XII with the apostolic constitution *Omnium in catholico* of 1951 as a suffragan of Guatemala, elevating the church dedicated to the Prince of the Apostles, St. Peter, to the rank and dignity of a cathedral.
