Zacapa, Diocese Of

ZACAPA, DIOCESE of. — City and diocese of Guatemala comprising the civil provinces of Z., Chiquimula, and Izabal.

It has an area of 14,044 sq. km and a population of 237,561 inhabitants, of whom 234,363 are Catholics; it has 7 parishes served by 2 diocesan priests and 8 regular priests, and has a seminary (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 460).

The diocese of Z. was erected by Pope Pius XII through the apostolic constitution Omnium in catholico of 10 March 1951 as a suffragan of Guatemala, elevating the church dedicated to the prince of the Apostles, St Peter, to the rank and dignity of a cathedral.
