ZACCARIA, PATRIARCA DI GERUSALEMME, SANTO

ZACHARY, Patriarch of Jerusalem, Saint. - Born in the second half of the 6th century, died in 631.

Little is known of his life. He was bishop in 609, and in the Persian capture of Jerusalem in 614 he was taken prisoner and led away to Persia.

From there he wrote a most moving letter to his Church of Jerusalem with exhortations to penance and mercy. When the Byzantine emperor Heraclius won the great victory over the Persians in 628, the Patriarch too was able to return, bringing the relic of the Holy Cross to his see. Shortly afterward he died. His feast is celebrated on February 21.
