BONIFACE. BISHOP,

2 Servant of the Servants of God to our venerable Brethren, the Archbishop of Rouen, the Bishop of Auxerre, and our beloved Son the Abbot of St. Denis of Paris, greeting and Apostolic benediction.

3 We consider with paternal solicitude the state of any kingdom in which the worship of the Catholic Faith flourishes; yet we extend the keen attention of our consideration to the state of most Christian France, in which there has always flourished throughout the ages and times an integrity of devotion toward the Roman Mother Church, a true reverence has shone forth, and a readiness of obedience has been served; and we pursue it with so much greater favor and hold it more sincerely in the bowels of charity. Indeed, in times past, duly executing the office of the Apostolic See in favor of the Churches and ecclesiastical liberty, we deemed it right to establish by apostolic authority that no one of whatever condition exist, under whatever name, whether Emperor or President:

4 or authority of the See:

5 under whatever name, or Prince or count; or gifts, to place upon the Prince, exact some do not deny the dignity of the See or concede; Whence we, intending to apply a fitting remedy to this matter; and that in this part the scruple of ambiguity might be removed, and the truth might shine forth clearly, we deemed it right to declare by these letters that the constitution itself or its prohibition regarding gifts; or mutual; or any other voluntary [offerings] of the Prelates, Ecclesiastical Persons of the same kingdom, of whatever Order or condition they might be, with all coercion or exaction ceasing entirely, and in no way extending, save to the extent that our most dear [ones] in Christ: and the rest might have been; Guy or their own, noble before; but rights retained, in any manner of giving or other service to successors; Dukes, and other Lords:

6 both by right and by deed owed to ecclesiastical persons, the aforesaid did not include, or comprehend in some measure; and that Ecclesiastical Persons for the utilities of their Churches by position or transaction, or in any other manner, but for acquiring liberties with the King and his successors and other temporal Lords, as their custom might appear, and before the same constitution they could freely agree, might vary, nor otherwise by the force of the constitution in any way contingent be hindered: and that the same constitution did not defend Clerics living clerically from engaging in commerce and merchandise, preferably or in servile acts. We have further added to our declaration of this kind that if to the aforesaid King and his successors for the universal and particular defense of the same kingdom a dangerous necessity should threaten; to such a case of necessity and in no way extending the constitution, the same King and successors might ask and receive from the Ecclesiastical Persons of the kingdom Subsidy or contribution, and that or that the Prelates or aforesaid Persons might hold and be able to render to him and his successors even without consulting the Roman Pontiff, under whatever name or notwithstanding the aforesaid constitution of redemption or any other whatsoever form of words obtained from the Apostolic See: and that the declaration of necessity aforesaid should be left to the consciences of the same King and his successors, provided that the successors themselves had completed their twentieth year of age; Concerning which we have wished to make known to the consciences of the aforesaid King and successors that whatever should be received beyond the case of his defense, in their own souls, upon which they should provide for themselves in which they might not have completed; of the same and of laymen, who from the council, but from the majority of the counsel of salvation, their own should be received, that which they would be bound to restore; and that moreover it was not and is not the intention of ours that the constitution, or declaration or rights; liberties;

7 other lords to be able to be known to remove; diminish, in any manner change, or derogate from them in any way, but new services, submissions to impose, but franchises and conditions aforesaid to preserve unharmed and whole,

8 to be competent to remove; to diminish, to change in any way whatsoever, or to derogate from them in any respect, but to preserve the new servitudes, submissions imposed, as we have prescribed above regarding the churches and conditions aforesaid, unharmed and intact for others. We command by apostolic letter to your citation, insofar as you,

9 or custom in the same, appointed to this, these secular not notwithstanding, or any others exempt, special privileges in any form:

10 words obtained from the See of the Apostle, to be rendered. And that to this they be compelled or that they cannot be communicated, full and express of the truth and whatever other common things, not making:

11 of this kind mention, to the greater, Dukes, Counts, Barons, Nobles,

BONIFACIO. VESCOVO,
