Apostolic Letter suppressing the Congregation of the Hermits of St. Jerome of Blessed Peter of Pisa

Apostolic letter of Pope Pius XI ·

APOSTOLIC LETTERS: THE ORDER OF ST. JEROME OF THE CONGREGATION OF B. PETER OF PISA IS SUPPRESSED

1 To the perpetual memory of the matter. — Among the institutions which the Catholic Church, with watchful care and constant diligence, strives to foster, sustain, and protect for the good of the souls of the Christian faithful, the Congregations of religious or Orders hold almost the foremost place, which, being the ornament and safeguard of religion, have flourished from ancient times in every age, and flourish even now.

2 But truly, both on account of the injuries of the times or their vicissitudes or changed circumstances, and also on account of human frailty and the weakness of human affairs, it has been seen in past times, and can now also be seen, that certain Orders and Congregations have declined from their former vigor and have become diminished or have ceased to exist. Moved by these adverse circumstances, the Roman Pontiffs, to whom indeed the governance of the whole Church is committed, have not hesitated, as is evident from many historical documents, either to reform or even to suppress or entirely uproot, when necessity or opportunity demanded it, some religious family less suited to attaining the ends of its own statute or Rule, in order thus to consult both the good and tranquility of the universal Church and the honor and protection of the religious life itself, and finally sometimes to pursue the advantage of social affairs.

3 Therefore, in order that We may follow in the footsteps of Our Predecessors in the pastoral office divinely committed to Us, being constantly attentive to this duty, when the affairs and matters of the Order of St. Jerome of the Congregation of Blessed Peter of Pisa have urgently admonished Us to provide those things which would tend to the good of the members of the same Congregation as well as of the Christian faithful, We have entrusted to the Sacred Congregation of Religious Sodalitates and to other men most expert in such matters in the Lord, that they might at length consider what should be decreed in this matter. For that Order, which, desirous of religious perfection and most tenacious of its rules, has already exhibited excellent examples to the Christian faithful, is now constituted of only fifteen priests and four laymen distributed in seven houses, so that in it nothing more of regular discipline can be maintained. Indeed, for many years Our Predecessors of blessed memory, fearing lest the same Order of St. Jerome might still be vital, repeatedly and repeatedly through the special work both of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars and of the Sacred Congregation of Religious Sodalitates and finally of Apostolic Visitors, attempted to reduce the Order itself to the ancient regular life and to imbue it sufficiently with vigor, but in vain. We therefore, having again heard the Sacred Congregation of Religious Sodalitates, by Our own motion, with certain knowledge and mature deliberation of Ours, and from the fullness of Our apostolic power, have determined to decree by these Letters what follows. Namely: I) We do hereby suppress and extinguish the aforesaid Order of St. Jerome of the Congregation of B. Peter of Pisa from now on by law; and all who belong to the same, We do hereby dispense from all religious vows whatsoever, whether solemn or simple, by which they are bound by reason of the title of the same Order, and We will that they be so dispensed in fact. Moreover, all aspirants or students or postulants or novices, if any exist, We likewise declare dismissed from now on and remit them to their respective homes. II) Henceforth it shall be forbidden to all to wear the habit of the same suppressed Order; but the priests already enrolled in the same Order shall henceforth put on modest clothing common to secular clerics. III) All and singular houses, residences, and property of every kind which belonged to the Order thus extinguished by Us shall from now on be transferred to the Holy See, which according to the norm of canons 493-494 of the Code of Canon Law shall dispose of them in due time. IV) Meanwhile, the Ordinaries of places shall take possession in the name of the Holy See of the houses and churches together with sacred furnishings and property of every kind as above, wherever they may exist, and shall render an account of their condition to this Holy See. Let the Ordinaries themselves, however, take care that the worship of God or the care of the souls of the Christian faithful suffer no detriment. V) We will, however, that provision be made for the sustenance of the members of the dissolved Order, from the fruits of the property which has been transferred to the Holy See as above, as much as possible; with annual stipends to be determined by the Delegate of the Apostolic See for individual members who, either on account of age or defect of health, appear unfit for the discharge of duties. VI) All those things which We have decreed by these Our apostolic Letters are to be carried out; We entrust this to Our venerable brother Luke Hermenegild Pasetto, Bishop with the title of Geritus, who in a more opportune manner, through a subdelegated person also, will provide that the priests of the same Order suppressed by Us, who are fit...

4 by benevolent Ordinaries or be incardinated to some diocese or without incardination be able to obtain permission to exercise priestly offices and ministries. VII) Since therefore the aforesaid Order of St. Jerome of the Congregation of B. Peter of Pisa by these Our Apostolic Letters, for all effects of law, is to be held as entirely suppressed and extinguished, in no way henceforth nor under any form or pretext shall it be lawful for anyone to restore the life of the abolished Order: nor shall postulants or novices be admitted in any manner or under any title by anyone henceforth. These things We establish, command and decree, declaring these present Letters to be firm, valid and efficacious perpetually to remain and endure, notwithstanding Apostolic constitutions and ordinances, of which also special mention ought to be made in perpetual suppressions, and any other things whatsoever to the contrary. We will moreover that to copies of these present Letters, even printed ones, subscribed by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of a person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, the same faith be given entirely as would be given to these very presents if they were exhibited or shown. Given at Rome at St. Peter's, under the Fisherman's Ring, on the 12th day of the month of January, in the year 1933, in the eleventh year of Our Pontificate. E. Card. PACELLI, of the Secretariat of State.

LITTERAE APOSTOLICAE ORDO S. HIERONYMI CONGR.

Datum Bomae apud Sanctum Petrum, sub anulo Piscatoris, die XH mensis Ianuarii, anno MDCCCCXXXIII, Pontificatus Nostri undecimo. E, Card. PACELLI, a Secretis Status.

E. Card. PACELLI, a Secretis Status.
