Bull of Pope Pius V ·

1 which you have gathered from every side, corrected and established from uncorrupted codices, as well as from the writings of ancient and approved authors, who have left us monuments concerning the sacred institution of these same rites, restored to the pristine norm and rite of the holy Fathers. Which, now recognized and corrected, with mature consideration applied, so that from this institution and undertaken work all may reap the fruits, We have commanded to be printed at Rome as soon as possible, and when printed to be published; namely so that priests may understand by what prayers they should make use, what rites or what ceremonies they ought henceforth to retain in the celebration of Masses. But so that those things transmitted by the most holy Roman Church, the mother and teacher of the other churches, may be embraced and observed everywhere by all, and lest in the future, for perpetual and future times, in all the provinces of the Christian world in patriarchal, cathedral, collegiate and parochial, secular and of any Orders monastic churches of both men and women, even of regular militias and without cure, churches or chapels, in which a conventional Mass is accustomed to be celebrated or ought to be celebrated aloud in choir or in a low voice according to the rite of the Roman Church, nothing other than according to the formula of the Missal edited by Us be chanted or recited, even if these same churches are in any way exempt by indult of the Apostolic See, by custom, by privilege, even by oath, by apostolic confirmation or by any other faculties whatsoever, unless from the very first institution approved by the Apostolic See, or by custom, which either the institution itself confirmed over two hundred years of celebrating Masses by this Pontiff—

2 And immediately he caused the Mass to be—

3 le, which now he confirms, and he wills it to be received and celebrated everywhere according to it, unless another institution approved by the Apostolic See or custom observed over two hundred years shall be. And he forbids that to be changed.

4 in these same churches constantly observed, from which, as We do not take away the aforesaid celebration constitution or custom, so if this Missal, which We have now caused to be brought to light, should please these same churches more, with the consent of the bishop or prelate and the whole chapter, so that, all things notwithstanding, they may celebrate Masses according to it, We permit; but from all the other aforementioned churches removing the use of these same Missals, and utterly and entirely rejecting them.

5 § 3. And to this Missal of Ours recently published, nothing shall ever be added, taken away, or changed, decreeing under the penalty of Our indignation, by this Our constitution to endure perpetually, We establish and ordain. Commanding and directly enjoining upon all and each of the patriarchs of the aforementioned churches, administrators and other persons, shining with whatever ecclesiastical dignity, even if they shall be cardinals of the holy Roman Church or of any other grade and preeminence, upon them in virtue of holy obedience commanding that, all other reasons and rites from other Missals, however ancient, hitherto accustomed to be observed, henceforth being entirely omitted and plainly rejected, they chant and read the Mass according to the manner and norm which through this Missal is now delivered by Us, nor in the celebration of Mass presume to add or recite other ceremonies or prayers than those which this Missal contains. And so that this same Missal, in chanting or reading the Mass in any churches whatsoever, henceforth be entirely followed without any scruple of conscience or incurring any penalties, sentences and censures, and that they may and are able to use it freely and lawfully, by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents, We also grant and indulge perpetually. Nor shall prelates, administrators, canons, chaplains and other presbyters called by whatever name, secular or of any Order regular, be bound to celebrate Mass otherwise than as We have ordained, nor be forced and compelled by anyone to change this Missal.

6 § 4. These present letters at no time whatsoever may be revoked or moderated, but shall remain firm and valid in their strength, We likewise establish and declare.

7 § 5. Notwithstanding the foregoing and apostolic constitutions and ordinances and those issued in provincial and synodal councils, general or special constitutions and ordinances; as well as statutes and customs of the aforementioned churches in use, by longest and immemorial prescription, not however confirmed beyond two hundred years, contrary in any way whatsoever.

8 § 6. We will moreover and by the same authority decree that, after the edition of this Our constitution and Missal, those presbyters present in the Roman Curia, after one month; those indeed within the mountains, after three; and those dwelling beyond the mountains, after six months, or as soon as this Missal shall be offered for sale to them, shall be bound to chant or read the Mass according to it.

9 § 7. That this, in order to be preserved everywhere throughout the earth uncorrupted and purged of faults and errors, all printers dwelling in our domain and that of the Holy Roman Church, whether mediately or immediately subject, under penalty of forfeiture of books and one hundred gold ducats to the Apostolic Camera, to be applied ipso facto; and others in whatever part of the world residing, under excommunication latae sententiae and other penalties at our discretion, may not, without our licence or that of a special apostolic commissioner constituted by us in those same regions, and unless through the same commissioner a copy of the missal be sent to the same printer, from which the norm for printing others by the same printer shall be received, compared with the missal printed in the City according to the great printing, with the precaution of the Clamuliie—

14 have been and agree, and in no way whatsoever disagree, before full faith shall have been made, to print or propose or receive in any way dare or presume, by apostolic authority and by the tenor of these presents we similarly forbid.

15 § 8. But because it would be difficult for these letters to be carried to each place of the Christian world, and to be brought to the knowledge of all at the earliest time, we order that they be published and affixed in the customary manner to the doors of the basilica of the Prince of the Apostles and of the Apostolic Chancery and in the square of the Campus Florae, and that copies of the same letters, even printed ones, subscribed by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of a person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, shall have the same undoubted faith everywhere among all peoples and places as these presents would have if they were shown or exhibited.
