1. Hatto, by the grace of God, Bishop of Troyes, makes known to all people of the present age, and of future times, that Dom Bernard of good memory, Abbot of Clairvaux, has made request of us that we should grant the Church of Lusigny to the canons of the Blessed Lupus at Troyes. Now since we held the said Abbot in great veneration for his sanctity, and would not willingly refuse anything within reason, that he asked of us: We have granted the said Church for ever to the Canons before mentioned; that is to say to Dom Bernard the Abbot, and to the other brethren who serve God under his rule, and to their successors; yet saving our Episcopal rights. But since there is a certain knight named Galterus Piscator, who had anciently possessed and held even to our times, a third part in the small tithe, and in the oblations of the four great Festivals, and in the census atrii, we take the whole of this from the hands of the said knight by the vigour of our ecclesiastical authority, and add it to the gift of other things belonging to the same Church, which we make to the aforesaid Canons. But the matter shall be so settled, that it shall be permitted to the said Abbot and to his successors to select a chaplain, who may be either a regular or a secular (priest), to serve the said Church. Who, when he has selected a fit person, lpersonam) shall present him to the Bishop, and the Bishop shall institute (prcebebit) him to the cure of the above named Church, without any contradiction. But the said chaplain shall make due response in all those things which belong to the Episcopal right, as in Visitations and Synods. The same Church is also bound to pay sixteen pence each year; namely, eight at the Paschal synod, and eight at that which is held in September; and every third year also five shillings. These therefore shall be paid by the presbyter, who shall be in the same Church, at the general Synod, according to the custom; but besides these, the same presbyter shall be and remain free from every exaction whatever. In the arrangement of this has assisted my beloved son and Archdeacon, Manasses de Villemaur, to whose charge the same Church belongs. Since then this gift has been made with deliberate intention, it behoves us to take the greater care that it should not be rendered of none effect by some future misstatement. Therefore we have caused the present writing to be made; which we have attested, not only with the impression of our own seal, but with the signatures of the various honourable persons whose names follow below.

These are the names of the witnesses, who have assisted at the execution of this document:

Executed in this year 1143 of the Incarnation of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Epact xiii., in the reign of Henry, King of France, and during the tenure of the Countship of Troyes by Theobald. 1 1 There is a difficulty arising from the use of the words of good memory as applied to Abbot Bernard during his lifetime; for the year of the Saint’s death was 1153; while this document is plainly dated 1143- Can the words “bonce memorial” have been added at a later period?
