10 VI. Nelle diverse nazioni il Direttore Nazionale dell'Opera a Propagatione Fidei sia parimenti Direttore Nazionale dell'Opera a Sancto Petro Apostolo (ove essa esista).
11 VII.

6 II. Secretarius generalis Pontificii Operis a Propagatione Fidei Consiliarius semper sit in Consilio generali Pontificii Operis a Sancto Petro Apostolo; itemque Secretarius generalis Pontificii Operis a Sancto Petro Apostolo iure Consiliarius esto in Consilio generali Pontificii Operis a Propagatione Fidei.
7 III. Summum Consilium (seu Comitatus supremus) constituatur Pontificiis Missionum Operibus regundis; quod quidem constabit Praeside Operum Pontificalium pro Missionibus, Secretariis generalibus ipsorum Operum unoque Consiliario singulorum Operum a Consilio eorundem electo.
8 IV.
10 VI. In diversis nationibus Director Nationalis Operis a Propagatione Fidei esto pariter Director Nationalis Operis a Sancto Petro Apostolo (ubicumque idem exsistit).
11 VII. Item in diversis nationibus Secretarius Nationalis Operis a Propagatione Fidei iure Consiliarius esto in Consilio Operis a Sancto Petro Apostolo; et Secretarius Operis a Sancto Petro Apostolo iure Consiliarius esto Operis a Propagatione Fidei.
12 VIII. In diversis nationibus Comitatus sit nationalis pro Pontificiis Missionum Operibus, qui quidem constabit Directore Nationali Pontificalium Operum pro Missionibus, quae sint in natione, Secretariis nationalibus eorundem Operum, unoque Consiliario singulorum Operum a Consilio nationali ipsorum Operum electo.
13 IX.
18 Datum Romae apud Sanctum Petrum, die xxiv mensis Iunii, in festo Sancti Ioannis Baptistae, anno MDCCCCXXIX, Pontificatus Nostri octavo.

MOTU PROPRIO
DECESSOR NOSTER*
ON THE COORDINATION OF PONTIFICAL MISSIONARY WORKS
1 Our Predecessor of happy memory, Benedict XV, in the Encyclical Letter Maximum illud, given on the 30th day of November in the year 1919, where he treated more fully of various matters pertaining to foreign Missions, on account of their great necessities, earnestly exhorted all good people to bring aid to them according to their ability, and furthermore said: "Wherefore we desire that those things especially which have been instituted for the benefit of sacred Missions be aided by the generosity of Catholics. First is the Work which is called the Propagation of the Faith, already praised many times by our predecessors: from which, so that an even greater abundance of excellent fruits may exist in the future, we will that the sacred Council diligently care for the propagation of the Christian name. For it is necessary that abundant resources flow from this source by which Missions both those already established and those to be established hereafter may be sustained: we are confident, however, that the Catholic world will not permit that, while others abound and flow with riches for spreading errors, our people, disseminating the truth, should struggle with poverty. The second, which we also earnestly commend to all, is the Work of Holy Childhood, whose duty it is to see that baptism is administered to the little children of infidels at the point of death, and this is all the more commendable because our own children too can participate in it... Nor truly should the Work of St. Peter, as it is called, be passed over, by which provision is made for the education and training of the native clergy of the Missions."
2 We, however, in the Encyclical Letter Rerum Ecclesiae, given on the 28th day of February in the year 1926, treated of that same illustrious subject of Missions, inasmuch as it is, by reason of our Apostolic office, so greatly a matter of concern to us; and there, discoursing on the Pontifical Works which we have mentioned, we wrote as follows: "... the Christian people ought to support the Work of the Propagation of the Faith with that generosity which is indeed the principal of all works pertaining to the Sacred Missions... and which fully corresponds to the necessities of the multiple missions which now exist and which shall be added to them hereafter... Now to the principal Work of the Propagation of the Faith two other works are joined... which, since the Apostolic See has made them its own, the faithful should aid and support with their contributions, called upon and collected, before the other Works which have some particular purpose of their own, namely the one called Holy Childhood and the other named after the Apostle Peter. It is the duty of the former... to enlist our children, who are accustomed to set aside their savings especially for redeeming the infants of infidels, wherever they happen to be cast out or killed, and for their Catholic education; and of the latter both by prayers and by collected money to bring it about that chosen natives may be properly trained in Seminaries and advanced to sacred Orders, so that their own people may more easily, in the course of time, be brought to Christ or be confirmed in the faith... Each work indeed, which is rightly called subsidiary to the principal work, just as our predecessor of happy memory Benedict XV... commended it to the care of Bishops, so we do not cease to commend it..."
3 We have indeed spoken many times, in words and writings, whenever occasion was given, of these Pontifical Missionary Works, earnestly exhorting all good people to aid them. And it pleases us here to profess publicly that there have been very many Bishops and men from both the clergy and the people who, for the purpose of promoting these missionary endeavors, rendered us most active assistance; for which missionary zeal we render great thanks to God, and we honor with due praise all those who so generously and diligently responded to the exhortations of their Common Father. Considering these things, and keeping before our eyes the necessities of the Missions, we judge it opportune, for their increase, to establish certain norms so that the Pontifical Missionary Works may be coordinated among themselves, though not coalescing into one and the same thing; for we will that each of these Works have its own rights and its own laws, and grow according to its own purpose. And we are confident that they, thus constituted in this manner and order, will increase with that spirit of charity and fraternal necessity by which associations ought to be joined together which both glory in the Pontifical name and strive together to attain a purpose so sacred and noble.
4 Therefore by Motu Proprio and of certain knowledge and mature deliberation of ours we command these things to be carried out:
5 I. The General Secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide, just as he is the General President of the Pontifical Work of the Propagation of the Faith, so let him be the General President of the Pontifical Work of St. Peter the Apostle for the training of the native clergy, as indeed it had been established from the beginning by the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide.
6 II. The General Secretary of the Pontifical Work of the Propagation of the Faith shall always be a Counselor in the General Council of the Pontifical Work of St. Peter the Apostle; and likewise the General Secretary of the Pontifical Work of St. Peter the Apostle shall by right be a Counselor in the General Council of the Pontifical Work of the Propagation of the Faith.
7 III. Let a Supreme Council (or Supreme Committee) be established for directing the Pontifical Works for Missions; which indeed shall consist of the President of the Pontifical Works for Missions, the General Secretaries of the same Works, and one Counselor of each of the Works elected by their Council.
8 IV. Let the President of the Pontifical Works for Missions preside over this Committee; he shall convoke it as circumstances require.
9 V. It shall be the duty of this Committee to provide for all things so that each Work may be able to carry out its own action in an orderly and fruitful manner, and to settle any difficulties that may arise between the various Works.
10 VI. In the various nations let the National Director of the Work a Propagatione Fidei also be the National Director of the Work a Sancto Petro Apostolo (wherever the same exists).
11 VII. Likewise in the various nations let the National Secretary of the Work a Propagatione Fidei by right be a Counselor in the Council of the Work a Sancto Petro Apostolo; and let the Secretary of the Work a Sancto Petro Apostolo by right be a Counselor of the Work a Propagatione Fidei.
12 VIII. In the various nations let there be a national Committee for the Pontifical Works for Missions, which indeed shall consist of the National Director of the Pontifical Works for Missions that exist in the nation, the National Secretaries of the same Works, and one Counselor of each of the Works elected by the national Council of the same Works.
13 IX. This Committee, which shall be presided over by the National Director of the Pontifical Works, shall have the duty in each nation to care for those matters which pertain to the common good of the same Works existing within the limits of the Nation; and likewise to settle any difficulties that may perhaps arise between the various Works existing in the nation.
14 X. Let there be one General Journal of the various Pontifical Works for Missions, and one National Journal in each of the Nations. But so that readers may lack nothing concerning the works which in any way pertain to Missions, suitable and definite space shall be reserved for the Works a Propagatione Fidei, a Sancto Petro Apostolo and a Sancta Infantia. Other publications (apart from the Journals which we have mentioned) shall be made for special and not common reasons, to be approved by the Committee, whether General or National. The General Journal shall be submitted to the prior censure of the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide.
15 We desire that henceforth—which moreover was the case even in former times—the Pontifical Missionary Works be subject to the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide, whose assistance to them is so great. It shall therefore be the duty of this Sacred Congregation to exercise a certain principal care over these Pontifical Works and to watch diligently over their progress; concerning which We shall be informed at fixed times, or whenever some particular matter requires it.
16 In this great zeal and solicitude with which We strive to advance the Pontifical Works for Missions, let everyone recognize how much it concerns Us that they flourish and prosper daily more for the salvation of so many souls, and with what grateful affection We regard all those who in any way assist the same; especially the diligent Bishops and those men from both the clergy who, whether in the Councils of the Works or by preaching and working eagerly, give Us their labor in happily enlarging the kingdom of Christ throughout the whole world.
17 All things whatever that have been established by Us in these Letters We order to be firm and ratified, any contrary provisions notwithstanding.
18 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, on the twenty-fourth day of the month of June, on the feast of St. John the Baptist, in the year nineteen hundred twenty-nine, in the eighth year of Our Pontificate.
