4 Venerabili Fratelli, salute e Benedizione Apostolica.

2 To the Venerable Brethren, Athanasius, by the grace of God Archbishop of all Ruthenia, Metropolitan, and to the Bishops of the Ruthenians, Theodore of Luceria, Felician of Chelm, Jerome of Premysl, and George of Pinsk.
3 BENEDICT POPE XIV.
4 Venerable Brethren, greetings and Apostolic Blessing.
5 We cannot doubt that your Fraternities will diligently endeavor that the Decrees which We have recently issued, by the counsel of Our Venerable Brethren the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church presiding over the affairs of the Propagation of the Faith, be obeyed by the Pontiff with due reverence and without delay, for gathering into one Body under one Head and one jurisdiction the Ruthenian Basilian Monks; yet since We have learned from letters sent to Us in your common name that you are modestly troubled lest something prejudicial to your customs and privileges be enacted in them, We have deemed it fitting to admonish you, in view of Our singular benevolence toward your Nation, that these same Decrees have regard only to this, that the Monks themselves, coalescing into one Community, and thus more easily instructed in Monastic discipline, may apply themselves to their own salvation and to more firmly winning over the minds of peoples to the Apostolic See.
6 § 1. These Decrees indeed ought to be held in veneration all the more because they adhere most deeply to the perpetual purpose of the Roman Chair, to reduce into one Order all Ruthenian Basilian Monks and to subject them to one supreme Prelate, who from near at hand may direct domestic laws and may take care lest Religious discipline suffer detriment in any respect. Wherefore to the United, as they are called, Order, fighting under the name of the Most Holy Trinity, there was given of old the faculty of enacting suitable laws for this design, to be confirmed by the Supreme Pontiff and to have strength from his authority. Which likewise your Synod of Zamość clearly set before itself, determining that into one Body were to be gathered together all those Monasteries which had then returned to the true flock of Christ or were about to return, which in schism had adhered to no supreme Shepherd whatsoever. But anyone can see that this is more easily obtained if whatever there is of Ruthenian Basilian members obeys the Proto-Archimandrite of the entire Order and carries out his commands. Nor can it be doubted that this was the mind of the same Council of Zamość, inasmuch as the Metropolitan Leo Kiska, who by permission of the Roman See convoked that Synod itself, had scarcely brought it to an end, namely on the fortieth day thereafter, when together with other Bishops of the Nation he earnestly petitioned that the supreme Prefect of all the Basilian Family be chosen alternately from the Lithuanian and Volhynian Monks; giving evidence that thus the Fathers of Zamość understood the constitution concerning one Prefect to be brought together, which Synod, accepted in this sense, was confirmed by the Apostolic See, whose office it is to judge concerning the true Synodal sense.
